A Metal with History: Why I Build Solv on 925 Silver
Long before modern design standards existed, silver had already spent millennia proving its worth. Ancient civilisations relied on it to build trade, currencies, and heirlooms. Across South Asian jewellery history in particular, silver wasn’t just ornamental—it was a deeply trusted store of wealth, passed down from one generation to the next.
When I founded Solv, building our foundation on silver was a deliberate choice. I wanted to honour that legacy while reinterpreting it for how we live today.
The Purposeful Alternative to Solid Gold
While solid gold has traditionally been the benchmark for fine jewellery, I feel high-carat gold comes with practical trade-offs that never quite sat right with me. It’s naturally soft, easily marked, and carries a price tag that often keeps fine pieces locked away in safes and also prices out the modern consumer.
I believe silver is the ultimate functional alternative. It retains the satisfying weight, feel, and intrinsic value of a true precious metal, but remains accessible enough to actually be worn and lived in.
Beyond its accessibility, silver gives me a creative edge. It offers exceptional tensile strength compared to high-carat gold. That structural resilience is what allows me to push my designs—enabling crisp geometry, sharp architectural cuts, and rock-solid stone settings. It gives Solv’s pieces the physical stability needed to handle continuous daily wear without warping or losing shape.
Defining 925 Purity & Quality
The internet is filled with the term ‘925 silver’. But what actually is 925 silver?
To In its unalloyed state, 99.9% fine silver is simply too malleable for architectural construction—much like 24k gold. To give it real functional strength, 92.5% pure silver is alloyed with 7.5% stabilising copper.
This precise 92.5 ratio isn't just a standard; to me, it's the sweet spot. It delivers the structural integrity required for intricate, long-lasting craftsmanship while preserving the high precious metal content that makes fine jewellery feel truly substantial.
In India, this 92.5% purity is strictly regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), where every piece of 925 silver receives an official purity stamp under national hallmarking standards. For us at Solv, that hallmark isn't just regulatory compliance—it’s how we provide you with absolute, verifiable proof of metal authenticity.
The Ideal Core for Lasting Gold Plating
When we create gold-plated designs, starting with a 925 sterling silver core makes all the difference. It creates a direct precious metal-on-metal bond. At a molecular level, gold adheres tightly to silver, preventing the frustrating flaking and surface breakdown that so often happens with cheap base metal substrates.
Silver’s bright, neutral surface acts as a naturally reflective base, allowing the warm, rich hue of the gold layer to shine through accurately without distortion. By anchoring our gold plating on a high-purity silver core, we ensure every piece carries genuine weight, structural longevity, and skin-safe durability.
Our Commitment to 925
At Solv, our commitment to 925 silver comes down to intentionality. I don't view silver as a compromise or a stepping stone to solid gold—I view it as the ultimate medium for modern design.
By combining a globally recognised precious metal standard, strict BIS hallmarking integrity, and precise structural engineering, we build pieces designed not just to look refined today, but to hold their ground as long-lasting additions to your everyday life.
