I inherited my love for jewellery entirely from my mother. As a child, I spent countless days peering into her jewellery box, completely mesmerized by her collection of one-of-a-kind pieces, quietly hoping I’d be grown-up enough to wear them one day. Today, as an adult, I finally do wear them. But the magic isn’t in the material; it’s in the ritual. Every time I put a piece on, my mother tells me a story—where she acquired it, the last place she wore it, or who she was with.

That intimate, living relationship with design is exactly why I built Solv. But it made me realize how flawed our traditional relationship with jewellery has become.

For generations, traditional heirlooms—pieces deeply rooted in heritage, intricate art, and painstaking craftsmanship—have been held hostage by a single metric: the market price of gold. Because value was tied strictly to the weight of a precious metal, these works of wearable art became the exclusive privilege of a certain class of individuals.

Wrapping fine craft entirely in high-karat gold created a dual tragedy. It gatekept beautiful design from those who truly appreciated it, and it condemned the jewellery itself to a life of anxiety. These pieces became too expensive to be lived in. They are fetched from bank lockers under heavy guard, worn with an undercurrent of nervousness for a few fleeting hours, and promptly locked back away in the dark.

When we prize the metal over the maker, we turn our most beautiful cultural legacies into sterile insurance policies. I wanted to liberate the craft.

The Democratisation of Heritage

When I designed Solv Jewellery, I did so under a simple conviction: exquisite craftsmanship should not be a luxury reserved for a select few. By shifting our canvas from traditional gold to newer, progressive mediums like 925 sterling silver, the exact same high-art aesthetics, intricate details, and heritage-inspired silhouettes suddenly become accessible at a fraction of the price.

This isn't just a shift in material for us; it is a democratisation of craft.

When I think about a Solv piece in the same sense as the pieces I took from my mother’s collection—a mother passing it down to her daughter—I feel certain that its true worth won't be calculated simply because of its metal composition. Instead, it will hold a tangible map of independence and joy.
